You just purchased a vehicle. Now what? After you buy a car, you’ll probably go for a drive! (We don’t blame you – when you have a great new-to-you vehicle that is reliable, comfortable, and fun, you want to take it out and enjoy!). But what other steps should you take to ensure your car stays in its best shape – and is road-legal? Find out with these tips on what to do after buying a used car.

After You Buy a Car

Registration and Proof of Insurance, Please.

Now, it is optimal to make sure you are insured before you drive away from the dealership. If you don’t, your insurance company may have a short grace period for newly purchased vehicles. Get this taken care of immediately! Once you have proof of insurance, you can visit the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for a title and registration. Your dealer may help with this when you purchase; make sure to ask.

Visit Your Mechanic.

You kicked the tires, checked the engine, test drove your vehicle. After you buy a car, take it to your mechanic for another look-through. While you’re there, it’s a good idea to get your air, fuel, transmission, oil, and other filters replaced, your fluids changed, and any little fixes (lights, spark plugs) taken care of.

Give It a Good Cleaning.

Clear away any evidence of the past owner! A thorough detailing will ensure your vehicle is clean, fresh, and ready for your next adventure. Take it through the carwash, clean the undercarriage, and you’re looking good to go.

Check the Brakes and Tire Pressure.

You probably did this before purchasing the vehicle, but it never hurts to do it again so you’re fully road-ready.

Read Your Owner’s Manual.

No, it’s not the most captivating reading, but it is important. You’ll learn about everything from when to schedule service for different systems to how to change the clock!

Perform Regular Maintenance.

After you buy a car, make sure you regularly change the oil, check the tire pressure, and complete other routine maintenance tasks. This will help increase your vehicles life and ensure it serves faithfully mile after mile.
