What to Look for When Buying a Used Car

Raise your hand if you love car shopping! Anyone, anyone? Nope. This process can be a hassle, especially if you are not an expert on what goes on under the hood. Add to that high pressure tactics some dealers use, and you have a chore that’s as fun as going to the dentist. Well, let us help! Examine the Exterior

Take a look around; is there any rust? Do you see any dings or dents? While you don’t have to necessarily rule out buying a used a car that’s been involved in an accident, you do need to know that it is structurally sound. Ask for documentation for all repair work. Take a look under the hood too, even if you’re not mechanically-inclined. Are parts dirty, rusty, or sludgy? This may indicate lack of care – or trouble down the road. Literally!

Take It for a Test Drive

Turn off the radio and listen to the engine. Any “funny” noises? How do the brakes feel and sound? Any glitches or interruptions in smooth driving? How does it handle corners? You can feel if the vehicle is sloppy or sharp and accurate.

Check for Leaks

After your test drive, stop the car and wait for 30 seconds or so. Drive forward a bit and get out and look for leaks. See any black, green, or pink fluid? Not good! These can indicate major problems.

Ask a Pro

Reputable dealerships will not have a problem with you taking the vehicle to your own mechanic for a check-up before buying a used car. Your mechanic can put the car through its paces and tell you if the car is a cherry or a lemon.
