Are you ready to go green by switching to an EV? Teslas are often featured on lists of the best electric vehicles on the market, and buying one used can actually help save you money. Here are some tips on what to look for when buying a used Tesla.

Check the Battery

Before buying any EV, it’s important to inspect the battery. Hot Cars reports that you need to look over the physical condition and ask about the cells inside the battery.

Tesla batteries can cost up to $7,000, so you don’t want to buy a used Tesla only to find you have to invest more money into buying a new battery. Check for dents, scrapes, or dings in the outer shell. If there is any sign of damage, the battery may need to be replaced.

When it comes to checking the battery cells, Tesla has a 100,000-mile or 8-year warranty on the battery. Most used Teslas will still be covered by this warranty. The battery is probably the most important thing on the checklist of what to look for when buying a used Tesla.

Exterior

Just as you would with any used car, you need to do the same with the exterior paint job, doors, pipes, and windows. Make sure all the doors open properly, and that there are no weird misalignments.

Also, make sure that the headlights, windshield wipers, and turn signals are all functioning properly. Finally, make sure the key fobs still work.

Interior

The Model S and X models are known to sometimes have glitchy touchscreens, so check to make sure the pixelations don’t look scrambled. Also, make sure all cameras are up and running.

It may be summer when you check out your potential used Tesla, but test all minor functions and accessories. You don’t want to wait until a month later to realize they don’t work. Finally, make sure the USB plugs and 12-volt DC receptacles are still getting plenty of power.

Now that you know what to look for when buying a used Tesla, Don’t Wait

Used Teslas are rare at car lots because they are a high-commodity item. If you see one you are interested in, then it’s best to act quickly, because someone else eyeing it probably won’t hesitate. But you need to know what to look for when buying a used Tesla.
