When you buy a car, all you need is an idea of your budget and the type of vehicle you want. Look around. See what’s out there. Take some test drives. Think it over! But when you physically drive to the dealership to buy a car, it is a good idea to come fully prepared. What do you need to bring with you when you’re ready to seal the deal?

When You Buy a Car: 5 Tips to Help Make the Process Smooth and Easy

Buying a car is an exciting event! Make sure you’re ready:

1. Get Pre-Approved for Financing.

You’ve done your homework, you’ve worked out a budget and price point, you’ve taken your test drive. Before you take the next step of buying a used car, get pre-approval for financing. You can do this online to streamline your experience. Fill out your financing application now.

If you do not choose to go the pre-approval route, make sure you bring proof of income (e.g. bank statement, paycheck stub) with you.

2. Bring Your State ID.

Don’t leave your wallet at home. To purchase a car, you must show the dealer a valid driver’s license or other acceptable form of identification.

3. Bring Proof of Residency.

Bring a piece of mail showing your current address (e.g. utility bill, home lease or mortgage agreement). The dealer needs to confirm your address so your monthly bills reach you. If you are going to do the financing application then, you will certainly need this as well.

4. Bring Proof of Insurance.

Bring a valid auto insurance card. If you’re adding the newly purchased vehicle to your policy, call the insurance company while still at the dealership.

If you do not currently have insurance, call your provider before you visit the dealership to get all of your i’s dotted and t’s crossed so you can drive away in confidence – and fully protected!

5. Don’t Forget the Title for Your Trade-In Vehicle.

If you are making a trade, bring your title! If you don’t, the dealership has to contact the DMV for proof of ownership (and may still want you to get the actual title too). It’ll slow down the process.

When you buy a car, make sure you bring all of the required documentation so you can drive away with the vehicle you want and need with no fuss or hassle. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to give our team a call today!
