Used cars can offer tremendous value – when you purchase used cars from the right dealer. You can get the vehicle you need (and even better, the vehicle you want!). But the process can also be confusing, especially when it comes to choosing used cars or certified used cars. What is the difference?

What Is “Certified” Pre-Owned?

Off the bat, many people think if a car carries the “certified” label, it’s automatically better. Well… more on that in a moment.

First let’s see what the term means. Typically, certified pre-owned cars (CPOs) are no older than five to seven years and have no more than 60,000 to 80,000 miles on them. These used cars are put through a multi-point inspection process and have the backing of the original manufacturer. Any worn or damaged parts are replaced or repaired prior to sale, and CPOs include an extended warranty (and may also include services such as roadside assistance).

Sounds good, right? This is why many buyers are happy to pay thousands more for this “peace of mind.”

But…

CPOs can be a great choice. But remember to consider all the factors. We already mentioned that the price for these vehicles is higher. Another factor that is less obvious is the inspection and certification process itself.

Not every CPO is backed by the manufacturer; that is, it is not inspected per the manufacturer’s specifications. Instead, the dealer may have its own certification program or use a third party. This doesn’t (necessarily) mean the cars are lemons, but it does give one pause. How rigorous is the dealer’s process? How painstakingly are the vehicles inspected?

The best route to take on your way to get a great car? Visit a reputable, experienced pre-owned dealership. You can find a reliable, beautiful vehicle (often at a lower price) that has been put through its paces to ensure its not only roadworthy – but you-worthy!
